Yes, the Stowa costs more, nevertheless, I don't consider the case nearly as good as the Ickler made case from the Archimede. Important factors I base my point of view on, are the construction, the effort and craftsmanship dedicated to build it/where it was produced. All these factors taken into account, the Archimede wins by far. Stowa is not giving Information to the customers in which country the case is made, sorry but that's like not saying where the movement was produced. Not giving an answer, is indeed a very clear answer and it means - not made in Germany look farther east . Stowa is a company which is marketing their watches with a more or less misleading story as original B-Uhr producer, they are constanly refering to the Made in Germany lable (as you often can see on Stowa dials) but will not tell openly where one of the most important parts of the watch is produced. I guess cases of comparable quality produced in germany for example are 3 to 5 times more expensive than such made in china or lithuania. So, if they want, they should outsource, but as a customer I want it to know and I will not pay the same price of they are doing it. Stowa knows that a lot of potential clients see it my way too. That's why they don't want to give any information about the origin of the cases. For them everything is better than people discussing (i.e. if Stowa would tell that cases origin is Far East) , whether a german made watch with a case of fareast descent is worth 800+ Euros. For me that's a criteria I take into account, for others it's not - I think both positions are legit.
The construction of the Archimede case I consider better as it's more laborious. They got the case to a hight of just under 10mm and they did it using central winding, what should be more difficult to do. Stowa is just a little higher, but using a caseback with six srews- so less elaborated. Easier to get a low case this way, and that's the point for Stowa, cheaper. If you compare the casebacks, I find the Stowas' adapts much worse to the case. The case of the Stowa basically is "chopped" just below the lugs and then a flat caseback is attached, less milling than on the Archimede which results in lower cost. The Problem is, one sees that it's cheaper. Compare the standard caseback to the Stowa FOLE, I can't imagine many people voting the standard nicer. Stowa sells a bug as a feature with the screws caseback and they know it, of course telling the customer the screws are a special thing. If they didn't prefer a central winding themselves, they hadn't built it in the Flieger Original Limited Edition - which in fact I see as a desireable watch. The Ickler case just has more craftsmanship in it. Stowa saves money on their watches in a smart way, I'll give them that - and since the financial crisis they got in trouble, so I can understand them doing it. But in the end the Ickler case is the superior case in terms of construction and craftsmanship spent to produce it. That's just the way I see it.
