Honoré de Balzac (巴尔扎克)

Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850), a dazzling chronicler of contemporary society, was well aware of the cultural implications of the name of Breguet. In two other novels of his Comédie Humaine he endows his characters with Breguet timekeepers, explicitly attributed to the great watchmaker:
'He turned towards the mantelpiece, noticed a little square box on it, opened it and found inside it a piece of paper covering a Breguet watch.'
Honoré de Balzac. Le Père Goriot, 1834.
'A fine gold chain hung from the pocket of his waistcoat, where a flat watch could just be seen. He toyed with the "ratchet" key which Breguet had just invented.'
Honoré de Balzac. La Rabouilleuse, 1842.

Alexandre Dumas, père (大仲马)

Alexandre Dumas the elder (1802-70), the most prolific (with nearly 300 works) and popular writer of his time, made another reference to Breguet watches in The Count of Monte Cristo, published in 1845:
'Mattre Pastrini drew from his fob a magnificent Breguet watch, bearing the name of its maker, the Paris stamp and a count's coronet. "There," he said. "Dear me," said Albert, "I congratulate you upon it; I have one almost the same." He took his watch out of his waistcoat, "And it cost me three thousand francs".'
Alexandre Dumas. The Count of Monte Cristo, 1845.

Aleksandr Kuprin (库普林)

Alexander Ivanovich Kuprin's works (1870-1938), written in the realist tradition, bear witness to Breguet's enduring famousness in Russian memories. In a short story entitled 'The Missing Watch', he describes a drinking party held one evening by a group of cavalry officers. One of the officers, Count Olkhovsky, boasts of his rare Breguet watch, only to find to his stupefaction that it is not in his pocket. In order to allay suspicion, and under the influence of drink and fatigue, all the officers agree to submit to a search. All except Lieutenant Chekmarev, who finds himself obliged to leave the party amid general contempt. A few minutes later, Count Olkhovsky's Breguet is found where it had slipped beneath the punch bowl. Chekmarev, meanwhile, has had time to return to his quarters, where he is found with a bullet through his head. A suicide note on his writing table reads: 'Farewell, dear comrades. I swear before God... that I am innocent of this theft. I could not allow myself to be searched for the sole reason that I had in my pocket a Breguet precisely similar to that of Count Olkhovsky, left to me by my grandfather.'
This story, with its tragic ending, was printed as part of a piece on Breguet's work, entitled 'Tempus ex Machina', in issue 22 (1986) of FMR magazine. Purists might question the notion of 'precise similarity' as applied to early Breguet watches, no two of which were the same, and all of which moreover bore an individual number. But then there would have been no story.

Prosper Mérimée(普罗斯佩·梅里美)

Prosper Mérimée (1803-70), member of the French Academy, whose father, the painter and chemist Léonor Mérimée (1757-1836) was a client and friend of A.-L. Breguet and his son, himself became a client of the firm in his turn. Besides his third 'Letter from Spain' (1830), in which he described the dangers posed to travellers in Andalusia by bandits and footpads, Prosper Mérimée was to return to the theme of watches, a favourite target for robbers, on several occasions, in his correspondence as well as in his short story Carmen, published in 1845, in which the author is robbed of his repeating watch, only to find it again a few days later.

John Robert Fowles (福尔斯)

The British writer John Robert Fowles (1926-2005) completed the initial draft of his first work, The Collector, in barely four weeks. Published in 1963, it soon achieved best-seller status. It was followed by The Aristos, a collection of philosophical essays and assorted thoughts, then by The Magus, which proved immensely popular with his readers. His most commercially successful novel does however remain The French Lieutenant’s Woman, published in 1969. In the 1970s, Fowles focussed on poetry, publishing Poems in 1973. He has not stopped writing since, his latest book of essays, Wormholes, dating from 1998.
